Bittersweet PSL debut for Benoni High old boy

Benoni resident and former Benoni High School pupil Lorenzo Gordinho (19) made his debut in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), for Kaizer Chiefs, against Maritzburg United, at the Harry Gwala Stadium, in Pietermaritzburg, on Wednesday, February 12.

The young defender has been in the Chiefs set-up for a while, since his promotion from the Chiefs academy, and finally got his big chance in South Africa’s top flight league in the game, which ended as a 2-2 draw.

Chiefs’ coach, Stuart Baxter, played Gordinho at right back against Maritzburg and, despite conceding a penalty for a trip on Kurt Lentjies in the area, that was subsequently converted, the youngster faired relatively well.

“I thought my debut went well, besides conceding the penalty,” he told the City Times after the match.

“I carried on working hard and gave a good performance.”

When asked how he was affected by playing in his less-favoured right back position, Gordinho said: “It didn’t affect me that much, as I have played there a few times, I just had to go in and do the job.”

“Being versatile in my play could be to my advantage.”

Gordinho is now looking forward to earning selection for the team again, by working hard and rectifying mistakes.
