Ten goal thriller
After the Benoni Northerns Football Club’s girls’ Winter League team secured a 2-0 win over Unaio, away from home, on Monday, June 23, the girls welcomed a very strong Crusaders side to Northern Areas on Friday, June 27.
This was the team’s seventh game of the Winter League.
It took a while to get going from the kick-off, with both teams feeling their opposition out until Ayesha Khan struck what her coach, Neil Senneck, called “one of the best goals I have seen in a very long time”.
Playing out on the right wing, Khan connected a perfect volley about 10m into the Crusaders’ half, that soared into the top left corner of the away team’s goal.
This goal sparked the game into life, with both teams playing aggressively attacking football at full pace, accompanied by some sleek passing.
Northerns, however, started gaining the advantage and the first half became somewhat of a goal-fest, with the in-form Chané Opperman netting twice, left-winger Aleks Antonijevic also scoring a brace and striker Reese Widdop adding her name to the score sheet, to take the team into the break 6-0 up.
The second half commenced at a frantic pace and was played at top speed.
Northerns were unlucky not to score two early goals in the second half but this portion of the game swung in favour of the away team who never gave up and continued with an attacking style of football.
The Crusaders team almost pulled off a comeback and scored four goals in the second half.
The game ended at 6-4 in favour of Senneck and his team.
