Zero league defeats at home for Old Bens
Old Bens remain in first place after Saturday's game.
Old Bens Football Club’s first XI played their final home fixture of the season in the ELFA Super League Seniors Division Two, on Saturday, July 19, against Olympia.
Coach Raymond Cloete’s team are on track to finishing the league as the outright winners, and a 0-0 draw, on Saturday, gave the team another point to extend their seemingly insurmountable lead.
The game was played at a fast and furious pace, with Olympia getting stuck into the Old Bens players and big challenges the order of the day.
A red card for a second yellow card was dished out by the referee to an Olympia player, but even with a player advantage the Bens team could not break the deadlock.
Bens were on top for much of the game with more than 60 per cent of the possession, but were, frustratingly, denied a goal after good chances were cleared off the line.
“It was just one of those games,” said Cloete.
“We could have played all day and not scored, but we kept trying and kept our discipline for most of the encounter.”
The coach added that the team need seven points from a possible 12 points to win the league.
“It is going to be hard for us, as we now have four away games coming up,” he said.
Cloete’s Man of the Match on Saturday was midfielder Thamsanqa Hlatshwayo.
