World record attempters to leave their mark
The prospective Guinness World Record setters for the longest marathon playing indoor cricket, the Benoni Tigers Action Cricket team, are aiming to leave a legacy in their town.
The record attempt will run from Saturday, September 20, into Sunday, September 21, at the Benoni Indoor Arena.
The Tigers have teamed up with Benoni-based school sports coaching specialists Active Education, to give back to the game.
Active Education is in the process of identifying a local inner-city school where the Tigers will assist with the refurbishment of cricket nets and facilities, with the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable cricket academy at the chosen school.
They will also identify a number of children who will take part in a training programme, in preparation for the event in September, when they will play an Action Cricket game with coaching from South African national players.
The Tigers are not only striving to set the record to raise funds for a farewell tour, next year, but they are also striving to leave their imprint by developing Action Cricket among youngsters, who may have never had the chance to enjoy and play the sport, by mentoring and coaching the young cricketers.
Things are getting more and more exciting for the record attempters, as Supersport’s Let’s Play initiative has come on board to film the build-up, the event itself and the post-event.
On the cricketing front, the squad have been hard at work in preparation for their Guinness World Record attempt and played a six-hour eight-a-side mini match at the Benoni Arena over the weekend.
Their next game will see them taking on a 12-hour stint from August 23 to August 24, at the arena.
With Active Education’s involvement and a local school set to benefit as well, the attempt is proving to be a truly Benoni affair.
Any individual/company who would like to be associated with the record attempt can contact organiser Craig Thomson on 082 569 1148 or 011 849 2279.
