Benoni Rugby Club’s first XV, fresh off a massive 94-5 win over East Rand Police, last weekend, welcomed Nigel to the club on Saturday, July 26.
A win was vital for Benoni in their bid to stay in the race for the Valke Merlin League play-offs.
Benoni ran in two tries on Saturday, through Derick Beukes and Steward van der Merwe, in an encounter that was rather hard-fought.
Nigel scored four tries to two, but even that could not prevent a 29-25 Benoni win.
Fly half Mornay Rossouw (who added four penalties and two conversions) scooped the Man of the Match accolade.
One more win for Benoni will see the team finish in second place in the pool stages, an objective set out at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, prior to the first team kick-off, the Benoni second XV won by a single point against Nigel and advanced to the play-offs with flying colours, having not lost a single match this season.
Nico Goosen scored a superb try for Benoni’s seconds, after some slick handling between the forwards and the backs.
Raymond Nel added two penalties to the score and shared the Man of the Match award with Gavin Fourie.
This weekend sees the last of the pool games for Benoni, when they take on Elsburg away.
