Showcasing junior hockey

A festival of junior hockey took place in Benoni.

The Benoni Northerns’ sports grounds were a hive of activity on Saturday, July 26.

With construction work continuing on the exciting Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association’s (EGHA) AstroTurf, in the background, it was quite fitting that junior hockey in the region was showcasing its increasing popularity, with the Benoni Northerns Junior Hockey Club’s (BNJH) annual tournament taking place on both sides of Brodigan Street.

Despite the frosty early morning weather, some 968 young hockey players and their families gathered at the grounds on Saturday and, although numbers were down from last year’s tournament, Shaun Taylor, chairman of BNJH, said the event went off well and the organisers “pulled it off nicely”.

“Overall a great day of hockey was had,” he added.
