Father and son duo take on tricky race

Father and son take on the FLCC Klip Race.

The 22km Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) Klip race took place on Saturday, August 16, from Daleside to Meyerton, covering a number of tricky and technically difficult rapids.

The race provided the Gauteng trials for the SA K2 River Championships, which take place on the Breede River, in the Western Cape, in September.

Michael Stewart has been recognised as the top paddler on the East Rand for some years, as a member of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club, based at Homestead Dam, near his home.

For the past few years he has been mentoring and teaching his young son, Liam, to enjoy river racing. The pair won a podium position at the Hansa Fish Marathon in 2013, in the father and son category, and are likely to enjoy that achievement again, in October, this year.

They finished the race in sixth place overall, against a strong field, as the fourth double to finish, in a time of one hour 32 minutes.

The overall winner of the race was Shaun Maphanga, top paddler of the Roodepoort-based club, in a time of one hour 29 minutes.
