Editor’s note: Chill out with some cricket

One of my favourite times of the year is fast approaching – the 2014/15 cricket season.
The gentlemen’s game is back in town on the weekend of October 4 and 5 and the East Rand’s finest proponents of the willow and leather will don their white outfits in the quest for supremacy in the outfield.
I played a bit of cricket in my school days but was never going to be the next AB de Villiers or Dale Steyn.
I just played for the love of the game (and the fact that I got to get out of class early when we played away matches).
The reason I adore this particular sport is because it is a game of patience, experience and respect.
And, I believe that the latter is the most vital characteristic needed in this game.
Besides the odd sledge or two out there, more so in the big match-ups, you rarely see things boil over on the cricket field.
Although I did once see a guy swing his bat at the head of one of his opponents (a long disciplinary story that was swiftly dealt with by the powers that be).
The Titans also return to Willowmoore Park in October and I, for one, am always excited to see some of the big names as well as some upcoming starlets in franchise cricket playing in Benoni.
Our town will also host the West Indies during their December tour to South Africa when Darren Sammy and co take on a South African Invitational team at Willowmoore.
It’s not the Proteas but hey it’s the next best thing to it.
So, grab a camping chair, purchase a cold beverage or 10 and support your local club on a Saturday or Sunday because there’s nothing more relaxing (to me at least) than chilling out and watching some cricket.
