Thompson is tops in Gauteng
Fourteen-year-old Delon Thompson, racing for the South African Birel Motor Sport Team, based at Kyalami, was crowned the 2014 Gauteng Regional Karting Champion in the 125cc Junior Rok category recently.
He also finished fourth in the South African Karting National Championship.
The Grade Eight St Dunstan’s College pupil also achieved a third place in the African Rotax Final, at Zwartkops, recently.
This year Thompson moved up from the 60cc class to the 125cc Junior Rok class and continued his terrific form from 2013, a season that ended on a high.
The Regional Championship consisted of eight rounds and Thompson won five of the eight regional rounds and finished second twice and third once, finishing on the podium every time.
The South African National Championship consisted of four rounds where the young driver finished on the podium twice and in the top six twice.
He was also nominated as a wildcard entry to represent South Africa in the World Finals, in Italy, but due to personal reasons he could not make it.
His aim for 2015 is to be crowned South African Champion, while doing some races in Europe.
