United students shine in the ring

The United Martial Arts International Dojo Benoni, situated at the Living Studio in Woburn Avenue, participated in the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Championship held in Kibler Park on Saturday, March 7.

Eighteen contestants from the dojo took home an excellent 30 medals (eight bronze, 11 silver and 11 gold medals).

The tournament hosted two categories, traditional kata and traditional kumite.

It was the first championship for six of the club’s new students who did exceptionally well and won their respective divisions.

Although they were a bit nervous, they showed much courage in the ring and excelled in the tournament.

“Well done to all 18 contestants who kept the dojo’s flag flying high with their achievements,” said shihan Aslam Mahomed (United Martial Arts International president).

“Nothing is more rewarding than watching our students do well and most importantly enjoying themselves.”
