Bens claim first win at Currin Park

The Old Bens Football Club’s First XI, on Saturday, March 21, continued an undefeated run in a league competition that has been going since their successful campaign in the 2014 Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League Division Two.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s men, fresh off a 4-4 draw with a tough Highlands Park team the previous weekend, welcomed Kempton Park to Currin Park on Saturday, in the ELFA Super League.

The team would emerge victorious with a 4-2 score line.

Cloete has certainly found a gem of a player in new striker Bilal Hajee Mohammed.

The attacker scored a remarkable four goals for his new club in the Highlands Park encounter, last weekend, and added to his tally with a brace of goals against Kempton Park.

It was Mohammed Brand who found the back of the net first, though, with an assist from Jethson Cloete, before the new man up front extended the lead as Bens went into the halftime break two goals to the good over their visitors.

When the half commenced Kempton managed to get the ball past Matt Carter, in goals, to get themselves back in the game, until that man Mohammed scored his sixth goal in two matches, with a casual flick from outside the penalty area that soared over the head of the opposition goalkeeper, who was off his line, to make it 3-1 to Old Bens.

Last season’s Player of the Year, Eduardo Mendes, stretched the home team’s lead to 4-1 before Kempton scrapped out a second, as a result of some less than desirable defending from Old Bens.

Kempton pushed hard to try to get back into the game, but Bens held out to pick up their first three points of the new season.

Midfielder Thamsanqa Hlatshwayo was named the coach’s Man of the Match.

The team will take on Robertsham away on Saturday.
