Four-in-a-row for BNFC
Northerns keep winning momentum going ahead of the Benoni Derby tomorrow night.
On Saturday, April 18, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI stretched their ELFA Super League winning run to four-in-a-row, with a convincing 4-1 result over Edenvale.
A brace of goals from striker Brogan Shrimpton (fresh off a hat-trick at Corinthians a week ago), a scrappy yet effective opening goal which eventually found its way into the net off right-winger Tshatsho Molapo’s head, and a well-placed strike from left-winger Skyeler van den Berg helped BNFC pick up all three points on Saturday.
An excellent strike from outside the box, by an Edenvale player, which sailed into goalkeeper Colte Smit’s top corner was the opposition’s one shining moment of the day.
The win keeps coach Jannie van den Berg’s men in the top echelons of the Super League and gives the team solid winning momentum.
“I am extremely happy with the result,” said the coach.
“We worked on a couple of things with our set pieces in training and it paid off for us on Saturday.
“We are on a roll now and hope to continue with that form
“It’s still early days in the league, but I will take the three points while they are there.”
He also praised the club’s supporters for turning out in the chilly weather.
“We truly appreciate their loyal support and encouragement.”
The fixture was also Shrimpton’s penultimate match for the club before he heads out to Michigan in the USA to play for the Muskegon Risers.
He is expected to play his final match for the club in the “Benoni Derby” against Old Bens FC on the night of Wednesday, April 22 (tomorrow).
“I would like to, on behalf of the club, wish Brogan the best of luck in the States,” said van den Berg.
He added that although losing the striker is a big loss to the team, they will adapt and change their game plan to play to the strengths of any striker who is selected.
The coach also praised a young BNFC second XI for salvaging a point after being 1-0 down in their encounter with Edenvale to draw 1-1 on Saturday.
* The Benoni Derby will be played between BNFC and Old Bens FC at Northerns Areas at 8.30pm tomorrow night. The clubs’ reserve sides will open proceedings at 7pm.
