Canoe Marathon returns to Homestead Dam

The Gauteng Canoe Marathon Championships will take place on Homestead Dam on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.

The championships will start at 8am on both days.

The K1 discipline (single kayak) races will be held on Saturday and the K2 races (double kayak) on Sunday.

K1 will also attract paddlers of all ages from the schools’ league, the u-8 age group and upwards to great grandmasters of 65 years and older.

The championships will serve as selection for the Gauteng team, at the South African Marathon Championships, which take place on June 6 and 7, in Pietermaritzburg.

The marathon will test endurance and consist of long distance laps, with a number of portages, where the paddlers have to get out of their boat and run a short distance before putting back in.
