Benoni fighters withdraw from EFC 40

EFC fans in Benoni will be a little disappointed with the news that the two fighters from the town have withdrawn from the milestone MMA event on Saturday, June 6, at Carnival City.

Former Benoni High School and middleweight competitor Gareth Sawyer suffered an injury in training and will be unable to compete at EFC 40, against Cameron “Ginger Ninja” Meintjies.

This is a bitter blow for the fighter, who is keen to make amends for his first professional defeat in the division, against Warren Allison, at EFC 36, in December, last year, at the Coca-Cola Dome.

It is not all doom and gloom for Sawyer, though, as EFC matchmaker Graeme Cartmell has moved the bout to the EFC 43 fight card, to be held in Durban, in August.

Meanwhile, Farrarmere resident and prodigious EFC flyweight JP Buys (who was expected to make his professional debut in the hexagon at EFC 40), has also been forced to withdraw from his clash with Jasen van der Merwe, in the Big Top Arena, due to illness.
