Boksburg batter Benoni on opening day

It was a difficult start to life in the Valke Peregrine League for Benoni Rugby Club’s first and second sides in Boksburg on Saturday, March 5.

The teams endured a tough day at the office away to Boksburg Rugby Club and their opponents were definitely the better teams on the day.

Benoni’s second XV went down 48-0 to a well-organised Boksburg outfit that scored eight tries and four conversions.

The club’s first XV also met a physical side.

Their hosts opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the 11th minute before Benoni added three points from a well-struck penalty four minutes later.

Boksburg then put pedal to the metal by scoring three quick tries to take the sides to the halftime break at 23-3 in favour of the home team.

In the second half Boksburg again went over the whitewash for a converted try in the 49th minute.

Benoni winger Michael Reicher replied with a try for the visiting team which was converted by Eugene Terblanche.

Boksburg, though, had the final say by scoring a penalty and a last try to make the final score 38-10.

The Benoni teams will face another tough opponent away from home in Sasolburg on Saturday, March 12.
