BNFC get victory, will miss striker

With 10 goals in two successive away ELFA Super League matches, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI is looking strong.

They will soon, however, dearly miss the abilities of gifted US-bound striker Brogan Shrimpton.

On Saturday, April 9, coach Jannie van den Berg’s men ran out against the newly promoted Boksburg Football Club and wrapped up a 4-0 victory to add to their 6-1 victory away to Union, the previous week.

Despite the recent influx of goals, van den Berg still believes that his charges should have done and can do better with the opportunities they have been creating of late.

“The performance was much of the same as last week,” said the BNFC shot-caller.

“We worked well with the players we had and our defensive patterns worked again, but we did leave a number of goals behind again.”

Striker Shrimpton afforded the coach the luxury of yet again playing a counter-attacking game, which allowed the goals to come.

The talismanic forward bagged a brace of goals to add to his quadruple of last week, while Tshatsho “China” Molapo and 16-year-old right midfielder Kwanda Sokuto (like last week) added their names to the score sheet.

Shrimpton flew out to the USA on the night of Tuesday, April 12, to play in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for Ole Soccer Club, which plays in the Premier League of America, along with former BNFC defender Alexi Munro, and former Old Bens midfielder Keagan Bailie.

The loss of Shrimpton to the States, much like last season, poses another tough conundrum for van den Berg, who will need to reconsider his game plan when the club hosts Corinthians in their first home fixture of the season, at Northern Areas, on Saturday, April 16.

The first team clash starts at 3.30pm, with the reserve team opening proceedings versus Corinthians’ reserves at 1.15pm.
