Positive league results for Bens
Old Bens Football Club’s first XI travelled to Bedfordview on the night of Wednesday, April 20 to play Olympia and earned a point under lights in a 1-1 ELFA Super League draw.
Lesiba Modau opened the scoring with a terrific goal, courtesy of an excellent pass from Lasego “Wii Man” Mlangeni, to give the Benoni side a 1-0 lead at the interval.
Following a defensive red card 20 minutes from full time Olympia levelled the score seven minutes into second half stoppage time.
“The team played well,” said coach Raymond Cloete.
“Olympia will definitely take a lot of points from teams at their home ground this year.”
• On Saturday, April 23, Cloete’s men welcomed defending league champions Randburg to Currin Park.
The coach was forced to play three youngsters in the team due to transport problems.
The first stanza was a tight affair with both goalkeepers making telling saves.
Old Bens striker Percy Visagie hit a screamer of a shot from a 35-metre free kick that the Randburg keeper could not hold onto.
Nick Simelane knocked in the rebound to give Bens a 1-0 advantage.
With a minute to go in the first half a bad defensive error saw Randburg grab the equaliser.
In the second half Old Bens dominated the game with Randburg’s defence being thoroughly tested.
Cloete and his team were left frustrated with two disallowed goals for Bens.
“Only the officials knew why they were not awarded,” said the coach.
Eventually, Modau hit a 30-metre free kick which screamed into the top corner of the net, winning the game 2-1 for Old Bens.
“I am extremely happy with the way that the boys played on Saturday,” added Cloete.
“Everybody gave 110 per cent.
“We played incredibly well to take three points off the Randburg team and our team was very well led by captain Sibusiso Zwane.”
• The club’s reserve side went down 3-2 to Randburg in a competitive game on the same day.
Old Bens will be at home to Sporting on Saturday, April 30.
