Darts players seek national success

A strong Ekurhuleni East Darts Association (EEDA) contingent will be hoping to return as winners, when they head to Bloemfontein for the annual Darts South Africa National Championships.

The best players from each region and district will compete at the tournament, at the Mangaung Metro Indoor Sports Centre, from July 10 to July 15.

Darts South Africa’s national tournament provides for both men’s and women’s inter-region and inter-district team events, as well as individual events for singles and pairs.

Some players expected to stand out include experienced women’s player and Benoni resident Magdalena Siemens, who will captain the women’s regional side.

After taking up the sport in 1992, she was awarded her Protea national colours in 2004 and 2006, and represented the country in 2014, at the Zone VI Masters Championships in Zimbabwe, and will again fly the flag at masters level in Zambia, in August.

Junior Protea Arelindo du Toit has taken the step up from the younger age group to the senior men’s ranks and will be a member of the Ekurhuleni district team.

He will be joined in the district team by fellow EEDA players Johan Niemand and Thys Ferreira-Netto (also set to represent South Africa at masters level in August).

Leon Jooste (playing manager of the EEDA men’s side will also manage the Ekurhuleni district side).

Niemand, captain of the EEDA team, has been in the South Africa men’s Top Four in singles events for the last three years.

EEDA’s women players, Claudene van der Spuij, Sandra Ford and Martelize Wiese will also represent the Ekurhuleni district, while Hermien Peens will manage the district side.

Hans Viljoen, chairman of EEDA, said he is extremely proud of all the representatives and is confident that they will be successful.
