Weeks shows his strength in Syracuse
Benoni’s South African national canoe polo player Nicholas Weeks (23) flew the flag for the country at the International Canoe Federation’s (ICF) Canoe Polo World Championships held in Syracuse, Italy from Thursday, August 29 to Sunday, September 4.
The sport of canoe polo combines canoeing and ball-handling skills with an exciting contact team game, where tactics and positional play are as important as the speed and fitness of the individual athletes.
The South African team played Switzerland, Portugal, New Zealand, Ireland, Finland, Brazil, Canada, Russia and the USA at the tournament. Weeks, a former Benoni High School pupil (above, right), takes one for the team in a clash with an Irish opponent’s canoe.
