Zafar Hoosen is zooming ahead

Lakefield resident Zafar Hoosen has zoomed to the top of the pile in the high-speed world of superbike drag racing.

The former Benoni Primary School, Liverpool Secondary School and Kathstan College pupil is not the reigning Supersport Shootout champion for nothing.

Hoosen is almost certain to duplicate his feat from last year as he leads the chasing pack on points with only two events remaining on the racing calendar.

Both events will take place at Tarlton International Raceway at the end of September and at the end of October respectively.

The Benonian champion, who has sights set on someday showcasing his skills overseas, recently proved his ability at “Drag Wars” in Walvis Bay when he competed against Namibia’s best superbike drag racers.

Hoosen stole the show on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 by setting the fastest time of the day with a lightning-quick time of 9.3 seconds down the quarter-mile, breaking a five-year standing record.

This win was extra special as it allowed Hoosen to honour his mentor, the late Wayne Heasman, who took him under his wing and offered encouragement and support throughout his career.

His mother, Sonja, told the City Times that her son discovered his passion for motorsport when he started racing quad bikes at the age of 13.

At 16 years old, after much persuasion, his parents bought him his first superbike, a Yamaha R1 and, since then, his skill on the high-powered machines has grown in leaps and bounds.

Hoosen has had tremendous support from his parents and they never miss a race. His father Ashrif (and his Benoni-based company Reliable Bearings) is his main sponsor.

“To be a national champion means a lot to Zafar and even more so to the children who admire him in the community [Actonville] where he grew up,” said Sonja.

“His family is extremely proud of our champion from Benoni and we wish to see him achieve all his dreams.”
