Thompson earns a place at the Rotax World Finals
Talented kart racer Delon Thompson (16) has won the South African National Karting Championship in the senior Rotax 125cc class and has subsequently booked his seat in the Rotax World Finals, in Naples, Italy, at the Sarno International Karting Circuit.
He will leave for the world finals tomorrow (Friday, October 14).
The St Dunstan’s College pupil drove in a Kosmic chassis this year with the RKT Karting team, which is based in Vereeniging.
This year was a real up and down year for the Farrarmere teen.
In the first Rotax regional race of the season, held at Vereeniging, he was excluded in one heat through an unfair decision from the stewards that forced him to finish seventh overall.
This put him on the back foot as he lost out on 35 points, but, he bounced back to win the second Rotax regional at Zwartkops, in the rain.
During the third regional event he finished third overall followed by sixth place overall in the fourth regional.
At the first national event in Cape Town Thompson finished second overall and followed that up with victory in the second national event in Port Elizabeth.
At the next stop, in Idube, Durban, the driver suffered major mechanical problems to finish in seventh place overall.
This meant that Thompson went into the final round in Vereeniging in second place in the championship, trailing first place by 23 points.
The youngster was required to finish in first position in all four heats in order to win the national championship and he did it in sublime style.
He qualified in pole position in the super pole by setting the fastest lap and won every heat (setting the fastest lap time in each) to win the South African National Championship by four points.
This earned him a seat in the Rotax World Finals, where he will represent South Africa.
Thompson will go up against 68 drivers from all around the world.
