Spurs end 2016 with victory over Springs

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI doubled up on their home victory over Tembisa at Lord’s Cricket Grounds last weekend with a mammoth home nine-wicket win over Springs Old Boys on Sunday, December 4.

Springs won the toss and elected to bat first in Actonville.

The decision proved to be the wrong one as they soon found themselves in trouble at 27/4.

Their worries compounded as they were staring down the barrel at 83/9, but, some good resistance from their tailenders got the team to triple digits.

They were eventually wrapped up for 117 runs.

Springs’ Johan Maritz (27 runs) and Reinhardt de Klerk (26 runs) were the top-scorers for the visitors.

Actonville’s Kyle Lansberg (3/29), Wilber van Dyk (2/24) and Jacques Nel (2/24) stood out with the ball.

The hosts stepped in to the crease just before lunch and played positive cricket with the score at 67/1 at the break.

When they returned after lunch Justin Brink (25 not out) and Michael Enslin (54 not out) took the team comfortably passed the target.

“We close the year with high hopes for a Top Eight finish to play in the newly-structured Premier League “A” section,” said ASCC public relations officer Zunaid Seedat.

“The last game for the Top Eight qualification [versus United Cricket Club on January 15] will be extremely important and we look forward to a strong finish.”
