Help aspiring basketball players achieve their dream
A 27-year-old Daveyton resident aims to change the face of sport through a Thats the Jam Streetball Tournament.
Makhosini Ncwana says it is time for people to start paying attention to other sports apart from soccer.
“We decided to have a basketball tournament because the basketball courts are always full with guys and girls practising and playing against each other, but there’s no platform in the hood that will actually put them out there to go against the best in the game,” said Ncwana.
The Jam Streetball Tournament is set to begin in August with teams playing qualifying matches in the hopes of reaching the finals.
Finals will take place in December, where winners can walk away with cash prizes and gear.
The tournament will take place in Daveyton and other areas of Gauteng, such as Tshwane.
According to Ncwana, the purpose is to promote the basketball and Hip Hop culture in the township and expose the skills of amateur teams and individuals (male and female) around Gauteng.
Not only will this create a space where supporters or followers of the sports and culture enjoy themselves it will also incorporate Graffiti artists, Hip Hop deejays and performances from local artists.
“We want to be an internationally recognised basketball and hip hop culture event that could build a lot of dreams for aspiring basketball player, to be the bridge that will take a basketball player from the hood to get drafted at NBA,” he said.
