Smith still in with a fighting chance in national champs
Rynfield resident and Benoni High School learner, Slade Smith (16), raced in the fifth round of the South African National Motocross Championships at the Thunder Valley track in Pietermaritzburg on July 22.
Riding his ABE Midas 125cc Honda, Smith managed to post the fastest lap time in practice by a clear two seconds over the rest of the field, setting himself up for a phenomenal day’s results.
While leading the first race, 11 minutes into the heat, he made a small mistake, allowing the second-placed rider through.
He fought back hard, but, with not enough time remaining in the heat, he settled for the second position in heat one.
This made Smith even more determined and he went out and won the second heat in fine style, finishing 14 seconds ahead of the next best rider, to give him the overall win for the day.
Smith is still in with a fighting chance in the national championship which moves to Harrismith on September 2 for the penultimate round before the final on October 14.
