Kleinfontein Bowling club celebrates 100 years

The old miners from the New Kleinfontein Mine between 1917 and its eventual closer in 1968 would have been proud of the way the members of the Kleinfontein Bowling club celebrated their centenary.

The club celebrated its 100th birthday with a two-day celebration on October 14 and 15.

About 96 bowlers attended the centenary celebration at the Mackenzie Park premises.

With 24 teams from clubs within the district, including two teams from the Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) district executive and two clubs from neighbouring districts converging on the club over the weekend, the tournament proved to be a major success.

Delmas Bowling Club were the winners of the centenary tournament, pipping the home club by shot aggregate after the last game of the tournament, but winning wasn’t the most important aspect of the weekend.

Everyone enjoyed great food and hospitality and each player received a prize for their support.

Club president and longest-serving member Jimmy Johnstone thanked everyone for supporting the club.

EKB District chairman Craig Hall congratulated the members on their effort, dedication and organisational skills.

He added that the weekend had been the best-organised tournament he has ever been to and confirmed that the club had set a new standard for other clubs whose centenaries are approaching.

He invited them all to the next celebration in 2117.
