Rynfield resident Slade Smith (17) spent the month of March campaigning in the USA.
He started out racing the prestigious Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross Series held over two days at the famous Daytona International Speedway Circuit during the famous Bike Week Festival, watching the Daytona Pro Supercross event the night before, which in itself is a huge privilege.
Smith raced his 125cc ABE Midas motorcycle in the Schoolboy 1 and 125 classes, notching up a fourth and a seventh overall in his respective classes with stacked entries, a phenomenal result competing against the best riders in the US.
Some good starts and clever thinking got him these remarkable results.
He then moved on to Alabama, where he raced the Millcreek Spring Classic in the same two classes, and he attained two incredible second overalls in both his classes.
He then travelled 27 hours to Wortham, Texas where he took part in yet another prestigious event, that being the James Stewart Freestone Spring National, where he had a phenomenal week of racing.
Having to qualify for his races, as there were so many riders, he finished with a spectacular fourth and fifth overall in his two classes.
These are Smith’s best results to date racing in the USA.
He will be racing in a new class in South Africa this year, the 250cc MX2 class on his ABE Midas 250cc Honda.
He has had some great performances so far in his rookie 250 year.
Round three of the South African National Championship moves to Bloemfontein on May 19, where the Benoni High School learner hopes to have good results on one of his favourite tracks.
