Motorists, keep an eye out for runners and walkers during the 2019 Johnson Crane Marathon
Most participants of the full marathon will be hoping to achieve good seeding times for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons later in the year.
The 38th running of the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon, organised by Benoni Harriers Athletic Club (BHAC), will take place on the morning of January 27 from Willowmoore Park from 6am.
The popular event, well attended due to the route’s flat and fast profile early into the road running season, will welcome thousands of runners and walkers from around the country who will take on the 5km, 10km, 21.1km or 42.2km race distances.
While both the 42.2km and 21.1km have sold out there are still 10km and 5km entries available.
The organisers, in a bid to attract more young people to the sport, are offering a discounted rate for school-going children who would like to run the 5km or 10km race.
Online entries for the 42.2km or 21.1km can be collected from January 24 to 25 at the Boksburg Sportsman’s Warehouse at the East Rand Value Mall from 9am until 6pm while 10km and 5km entries can be purchased at this point.
They can also be bought and numbers can be collected at Willowmoore Park in Harpur Avenue on January 26 (from 9am until 4pm) and January 27 (from 4.30am before the start of the race).
The following main roads, streets and intersections will be affected on the morning and motorists are urged to heed patience and exercise caution in the interest of safety:
• Benoni CBD: Woburn Avenue, Turvey Street, Park Street, Harrison Street, Russel Street, Bright Street, Harley Street, West Street, Railway Avenue, Kimbolton Street, Mowbray Avenue, Wooton Avenue, Newlands Avenue, Victoria Avenue, Kemston Avenue, Elston Avenue, Howard Avenue, Woburn Avenue, Cranbourne Avenue, Princes Avenue, Ampthill Avenue, Liverpool Road, Harpur Avenue.
• Westdene/Lakefield: Edward Street, Sanctuary Lane, The Drive, Aloe Street, Short Street, Kilfenora Street, Sunnyside Avenue, Sunny Road, Greendale Avenue, Sher Avenue, Reeva Road and Atlas Road, Lakefield Avenue, Divot Street.
• Boksburg (Beyers Park and Impala Park): Phillips Road, Rydal Road, Kirschner Road, Vrey Street, Griessel Road, Bartlett Road, North Rand Road, Leith Road, Ridge Road, Caravelle Road, Rolls Royce Street, Phantom Road, Sabre Road, Shackleton Road.
• Alphen Park/Atlasville: Lanzerac Street, Reier Road, Vintage Street, Tecoma Road, Finch Street, Star Street.
• Farrarmere: Byron Street, De La Mare Street, Wilge Road, Sangiro Street, Langenhoven Street, Milton Street, Brooke Street, Masefield Street, Freeman Street, Lawrence Street, Reitz Road, Gould Street, Kei Road, Umgeni Road, Crocodile Road, Umfolozi Street, Cambridge Street, Bayley Street, Vaal Road, Wordsworth Road, Main Road (service road), Ullswater Road, Windemere Drive.
