LISTEN/READ: Piketh and the world to take on the Australians in ‘Ryder Cup’ of bowls
Piketh picked for prestigious bowls team.
International lawn bowling star and South Africa’s number one bowler, Colleen Piketh, needs no introduction when it comes to her vast experience and countless achievements on the world’s greens.
The Rynfield resident was selected as the only South African representative in a composite team made up of 10 world-class bowlers (five women and five men) who will battle against the Australian Jackaroos in a marquees international bowls event, the World Bowls Challenge, to be played on the covered surfaces at the state-of-the-art Moama Bowling Club in New South Wales, Australia, on November 29 and 30.
The aim of the World Bowls Challenge is to help raise the profile of the sport and its premier players and has been compared to golf’s Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.
Piketh said it is an amazing accomplishment to have been selected to compete with the best of the best lawn bowlers on the planet.
“I have played against my new teammates many times before, but finally have a chance to play alongside them and learn from them,” she said.
“They are all Commonwealth medallists, so I will be in good company.
“I will take in and learn as much as I can at this event.”
In 2014, Piketh won a Commonwealth Games women’s doubles gold medal as well as a singles bronze medal in Glasgow, Scotland.
Last year, she won a silver medal in the pairs final and a bronze medal in the singles at the Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.
On May 4, she flew out to represent South Africa at the Atlantic Rim Championships in Cardiff, Wales, from May 10 to 23.
She is one of five South Africans competing in Wales.
Piketh said she expects heavy greens at the championship.
