Local cycling speedsters off to World Champs in Germany

The SA team will fly out to Germany on August 9 and return on August 18.

Three young cyclists from Benoni have been included in a 12-man South African squad for the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Frankfurt, Germany, from August 14 to 18.

Keagan van Wyk (17) and brothers Dillon (17) and Aidan Geary (18) are all avid cyclists and can be seen on training rides regularly in and around Benoni.

Van Wyk (team pursuit and individual pursuit) and Dillon (team pursuit and points race) are part of the endurance squad and Aidan was selected for the sprinting squad (200m match sprints and 1km time trial).

They were all selected after making the qualifying standard at the 2019 SA Track Championships in Cape Town in March.

Keagan and Aidan also represented South Africa in January at the African Continental Track Championships and brought home one silver and five bronze medals between them.

Van Wyk is a learner at Hoërskool Hans Moore in Northmead and the Geary brothers are both at the Leeuwenhof Akademie in Bedfordview.

Their cycling friendship was kindled when the two Geary brothers were introduced to track cycling in 2015 by Keagan’s father, Martin van Wyk.

Track-cycling venues are limited in this country and, over and above regular road training, the boys are required to make regular trips to the Hector Norris Park outdoor track in Johannesburg to hone their speed skills.

Keagan and Dillon also had to fit in a three-week training camp in the United States to prepare for the world championships.
