Help keep Benoni girl on track

The accident left her critically injured due to a traumatic brain injury.

Benoni AH resident Savannah Woodward, the first South African and African female to compete in the ITALIKA Women’s World Cup, is looking for sponsors to assist her in keeping her dreams alive.

Woodward started racing in 2006 at the age of five on a motocross dirt bike and from there, her love for the sport grew.

Cape karters come out on top in a magical day of racing

“In 2012 I made the transition to superbike racing and from there competed in South Africa and progressed to competing overseas multiple times,” she said.

“I have had the opportunity to ride and race superbikes on various tracks in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Mexico and Zimbabwe.”

2018 was Savannah’s break-through year where she received and took the opportunity to compete in the Italika Women’s World Cup in Mexico.

“At this point, the dream of turning my racing into a career was becoming a reality,” she explained.

“In Mexico I trained with some of the best superbike racing coaches (Chicho Lorenzo – multiple Moto GP winner Jorge Lorenzo’s father).

“Unfortunately, at the last Italika Women’s World Cup race of 2018, I was involved in a serious racing accident.”

The accident left her critically injured due to a traumatic brain injury, but after taking a gap year from racing (2019) to recover, she was given the all-clear on January 1 last year and was allowed to race again.

“Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and losing many of my partnerships, my racing is looking rather glim,” she said.

“Nevertheless, I have been training harder than ever and I am aiming to win the Extreme Festival 2021 Championship on my Kawasaki ZX6 (600cc) up against 1 000cc.

“Alongside that, I will most likely compete in any other superbike event possible.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Dirt Nurse, Riding for a Limb and Dewcast for offering me some assistance towards my racing this year.”
