Baseball is back

As a club, they are always looking for new ways to attract players.

Benoni Indians Baseball began their season with a bang when they hosted the first round of games in the local GPBC Junior League at the Benoni Northerns Sports ground recently.

Results for the first round are as follows:

• u-10: Benoni Cherokees beat Boksburg Cardinals A 30-23

• u-12: Benoni Cheyenne beat Palm Ridge 16-6

• u-15: Benoni Mohawks drew with Boksburg Cardinals 11-11

• u-18: Benoni Braves beat Palm Ridge 15-1

With the Covid restrictions down to level one, the Indians saw 18 teams battle it out and compete across all age groups.

“The pandemic has made it tough for all sporting codes to take to the fields again and has created a loss in numbers across the board. Baseball has been no different,” said Clifford White, Benoni Indians Baseball junior chairperson.

“We find ourselves looking for new players to put the Indians in a building phase again. With schools starting with their T-Ball leagues again, we are hoping that it will spark some renewed interest in the sport as it is action-packed and fun for all children at the beginner level.”

As a club, they are always looking for new ways to attract players and provide them with top quality facilities and coaching, with the help of various donors and club members.

“The Indians now boast three new fields with catch fences, making our facilities one of the best in the region,” he explained.

The season officially started on October 10, but they are still looking for new players in all age groups: u-8, u-10, u-12, u-15 and u-18.

“We train every Tuesday and Thursday from 17:00 to 18:30 at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club grounds,” he said.

“Anyone is welcome to join and sign up.”
