24 Hours of ILamuna is around the corner

Tickets are already on sale at R100 and the winner can either keep the car for racing or use it as a road car.

Benoni’s Clare Vale and her team recently competed in the SA Endurance Series Championship Round Six (four hours) in East London.

“Our weekend in East London was up and down, we qualified second on October 1,” she said.

“We were in a great position to repeat our third-place finish, as we did in May or go even better. On Saturday, we were lying second on lap 15 when the prop shaft broke. As a result, we spent about an hour and a half in the pits replacing it. Although we did get going and finish the race, we were nowhere. That’s racing for you!”

Although they didn’t place well in this race, they are very excited for their most important event for the year, the 24 Hours of ILamuna race that takes place at the Red Star Raceway on the weekend of October 30.

“Since 2009, our racing team has hosted a corporate karting event at Zwartkops in aid of the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre,” Vale explained.

“It has always been a successful, well-supported event. Since our first event in 2009, we have raised well over R500 000 for the centre.

“Since Covid hit and we went into lockdown last year, we haven’t been able to host the event and like most NGOs, the centre is struggling for funds. We had already entered the 24 Hours of ILamuna (literally, 24 Hours of Lemons) race, which has a full house of 40 entries, and the rule is that no car may be worth more than R50 000.

“Our ‘lemon’ is a road-legal VW Golf Mark 1, and we decided to raffle it, with all funds raised going to the centre.”

Tickets are already on sale at R100 and the winner can either keep the car for racing or use it as a road car.

“Although we have stripped everything out for the race, we have stored the original interior and will re-instal it all if necessary. When the race is over, we will give the car a quick refurb, make the lucky draw and the winner can collect the car,” she concluded.
