Benoni’s Fortuin brings home another boxing title
The last time this match took place, there were some disputes with the outcome.
Benoni resident and boxer Sharadene Fortuin (27) took part in an all-women boxing tournament hosted by Starline Boxing Promotions recently, fighting it out once again for the SA Female Bantamweight title.
The last time this match took place, there were some disputes with the outcome.
Fortuin not only won the title but also put the matter to rest against Melissa Miller after their previous fight for the same title was marred by controversy.
“The last time we fought for the title, Miller’s coach disputed the decision that we had won,” explained Fortuin’s coach, Harry Ramagoadi Manaka.
“Boxing SA (BSA) appointed neutral judges to score the fight again, of which they all scored in Miller’s favour,” he said.
Aggravated by this decision, Fortuin’s management disputed it and filed an official complaint with BSA.
A rematch was orchestrated and this time, after 10 rounds against “Honey Bee” Miller in Durban, Fortuin was named the domestic title winner unanimously.
“I am glad we put this matter to bed. We can now say we beat her fair and square. We can only get better from here,” said Manaka.
The owner of VIP Boxing Academy in Benoni also commended Miller for her efforts.
“Miller was always going to bring, the heat but we extinguished all that fire,” he said.
Fortuin, who has previously held three Internation Boxing Organisation belts, now four, has improved to 13 wins, one loss and one draw.
“I would like to thank my sponsors, Autowash and Ronelle Battalion Supps, for believing in me. To my coach, thank you, without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Fortuin.
