The Lake Club hosted the B20 cricket bowls ladies support day on February 6 to raise funds for the region’s women’s bowling teams.
The two bowling greens were abuzz with activity as bowlers from different clubs turned out in their numbers to show their support.
“Every year we hold this day to assist ladies bowling teams with their out of pocket expenses for the upcoming season,” explained organiser and B20 cricket bowls founder Tony Norris.
He added that they were hoping to raise around R30 000. Norris told the City Times that he was taken aback by the strong turnout as he was only expecting a few participants.
“As it was our first game, we were expecting a limited participation but in true bowling tradition the bowlers turned out in their numbers and we had to change the greens from six to seven rinks to accommodate everyone.”
Norris said since B20 cricket bowls started four years ago, interest in the game has grown steadily.
“We have had a steady growth in participation to the extent that this family fun day is now by bookings only. This year all spots were filled in less than a week and it shows the strength of the bowlers.
“We also have our B20 cricket bowls juniors who have turned out in their numbers to support our ladies teams yet again.”
Not a traditional lawn bowls game, B20 cricket bowls is a game of T20 cricket played on a bowling green. It’s played with a set of wickets at one end of the green and a scoring area at the other end, where runs can be accumulated.
Norris revealed that it’s been accepted as an official game of bowls by Bowling South Africa and it’s now played by 78 bowling clubs across the country. He said that several countries in Africa and Asia have adopted the game.
“It’s played by six clubs in Zimbabwe, five in Botswana and 12 in Australia. A few countries in Asia have also adopted this game.”
The event was won by the Benoni Town Bowling Club.
