Benoni Northerns Mammoths beat local rivals Old Bens Chirpers 3-2 in an Eastern Gauteng Hockey League men’s reserve B-League top-of-the-table clash at the Northerns Astro on July 10.
The game started at an intense pace as both teams battled for possession in the middle of the park.
The Mammoths drew first blood within the first three minutes as André Theron opened the scoring with a wonderful strike, leaving the opposition keeper stunned.

Theron’s goal boosted the home side’s confidence as they started to dominate in all departments, with their defenders clearing any threats with ease while the attackers were able to unlock the opposition’s defence.

Five minutes before the first quarter break, Roger Paterson added his name to the scoresheet to give the Mammoths a 2-0 lead. Bryan Klopper added the third goal in the 17th minute.

The Chirpers’ Callum Stopforth grabbed a goal for his team in the 24th minute to begin a fightback. The Chirpers scored another goal but it was too little as the Mammoths took all the points.
The Mammoths’ captain, Clayton Wiesner, said he was impressed with his team’s performance but they need to work on their fitness.
“It was a tough game because they are hard to play against, especially with them being number one on the log. We consider them as our rivals and we hope this win will be a motivation going forward,” said Wiesner.
