Spurs CC invites you to tribute match

The match starts at 10:00 and entrance is free.

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club legends will go head to head with Lenasia Cricket Club legends in a tribute match in honour of the late Mohammed Ghanchi and Hoosain Ayob on September 18 at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium.

Ghanchi, who passed away last year, is a former Spurs stalwart who spearheaded the growth of cricket in Actonville. He was one of the founding members and formed part of the first elected board committee of Easterns Cricket, then known as the Easterns Transvaal Cricket Union in 1991.

Ayob is a former coach and administrator of Lenasia Cricket Club. He passed away on May 6 at the age of 81.

According to Spurs CC media liaison officer Zunaid Seedat, the match was the idea of Spurs player Yahya Seedat who recognised the need to honour the great contributions made by Ghanchi and Ayoob in the development of the game in Actonville and Lenasia, respectively.

“Many a cricketer would not be here today had it not been for their selfless drive to see the sport thrive. The match itself promises to be competitive as both sides have players who have made it. There is no doubt there will be quality on show,” he said.

“Both teams have prepared for the upcoming fixture with fitness and training sessions as well as warm-up games.

“Actonville Spurs’ executive will be present on Sunday to honour and appreciate the contributions of the stalwarts.

“Special recognition will also be afforded to other contributors of the sport who have since passed on such as Solly Chotia, Boetie Fazel and Tiffie Barnes to name just a few.”

The match starts at 10:00 and entrance is free.

Spurs will be captained by Yahya Seedat and Lenasia by Ahmed Bhabha.
