Golding extends his unbeaten run

Golding extended his unbeaten run to two fights following a draw in his debut match in July.

Local boxer Christopher Golding claimed a unanimous decision win over debutant Thuso Morakabi from the North West in their super lightweight bout on September 24.

Golding extended his unbeaten run to two fights following a draw in his debut match in July.

The fight was scored 38-38, 38-38 and 39-37 in favour of the Western Ext resident by judges Mmoledi Molokwane, Cyphrial Ndaba and Thando Xamlashe.

Scheduled to fight Boksburg resident Dwayne du Toit, Golding’s camp had to scramble for a last-minute replacement as Du Toit withdrew from the match.

That Morakabi accepted the challenge came as a welcome relief for the 24-year-old, who was itching to get inside the squared circle.

“I was prepared for Dwayne but then he withdrew. I didn’t know who I was fighting until a couple of days before the fight.

“Dwayne’s withdrawal didn’t make me lose focus as I had trained hard and was ready to be in the ring. I was just happy that they found an opponent for me and the fight wasn’t cancelled,” Golding said.

It may have been Morakabi’s first foray into the professional ranks and in the early stages the rookie came out guns blazing, but Golding soon had him against the ropes.

“Thuso came out strong, but I was patient and kept my defence tight. He landed a mean couple of body shots, one of which brought me to my knees in the first round. I got up again and continued. He won the first round.

“I was able to assess skills, strengths and weaknesses in the first round. From the start of the second round I had him and dominated the remaining three rounds,” he said.

This win has ignited his spark and he is itching to get back into the ring.

“I would like to get another fight before the end of the year. The more fights I get, the quicker my career can advance.

“I would like to thank my coaches Harry Manaka-Ramagoadi, Leo and my brothers at VIP gym. A special thank you to my sponsor, the Bicycle Merchant, for coming through for me.”

Golding revealed that he needs sponsors and those who may be willing to help him can contact his mother, Lesley, on 078 788 2033.
