An average of 18 drivers per week are arrested for exceeding the speed limit
The EMPD is concerned that failure to practice sound practical judgement where the slightest mistake could lead to loss of limb or life is something some imprudent motorists continue doing in the towns of Brakpan, Benoni and Springs.

This follows the arrests of 25 drivers, for various traffic transgressions, on October 9.
EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said that an average of 18 drivers per week are arrested for exceeding the speed limit in these areas.
“On October 9, in Benoni, along the R51, between the N12 freeway and Modderbee Road, an 80km/h zone, nine drivers, including a female, were nabbed doing speeds of between 132km/h and 116km/h,”said Kgasago.
He added that, on the morning of October 8, in a speed operation on Welgedacht Road, between Grootvaly Street and 4th Avenue, a 60km/h zone, six speedsters were caught doing speeds of between 104km/h and 97km/h, while, on Tuesday night, in Brakpan, along the R23, between Kaapmaiden and Dube streets, an 80km/h zone, 10 drivers landed behind bars after they were caught doing speeds ranging between 158km/h and 116km/h.
“All the arrested speedsters were charged with reckless and negligent driving and were released after posting bail of R1 000 each,” Kgasago said.
They will appear in their respective Magistrates Courts soon.
