Don’t get distracted by this film

Will Smith is back to good form.

After the fiasco with “After Earth”, he redeems himself in Focus, a witty, funny film about con artists and pickpockets, which leaves you clinging to all your belongings as you leave the theatre.

Nicky (Smith) is a seasoned pickpocket/conman who takes the lovely Jess (Margot Robbie) under his wing, after her inexperience causes her to miss a mark.

I won’t spoil the rest by revealing all here, since it does have a few twisty turns (hopefully saying there are twists didn’t spoil it for you already).

I have to admit, expectations weren’t high when I walked into the cinema, but I was delightfully surprised.

The writing is cleverly funny and laughably relatable at times.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie give bubbling performances and work together very well.

They bring the script to life and keep you watching.

The movie is generally good, with an interesting theme and twisty plot.

While the directing itself does contain the occasional mistake and unrealistic inset, the movie was easy to watch and enjoy.

If you like a fun movie to enjoy with a few friends, this is a good option, but if you want something deep, heavy and realistic perhaps Focus doesn’t fit the bill.

Focus is showing at Ster Kinekor, Northmead Square. FvD
