Local designer makes a splash

Angel Cammarata showcased her latest designs in a fashion show on Thursday, March 26, at her studio, in Tom Jones Street.

Cammarata is the founder and owner of Deja Vu Designs, having started the company in 2009. It is now one of the primary fashion design studios in Benoni.

This was Cammarata’s first male clothing range, the DV Men collection, which has always been one of her a goals.

“You know what they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” she said.

“I started from the dusty streets of Etwatwa, where my mom used to sew, and as a child I always enjoyed dressing up.

“After that I had one year of training, as that’s all my parents could afford at the time, but, because I was so driven and very ambitious I took in every detail and ran with the little that I had learnt.”

She worked from home for three years and has been renting the studio in Benoni for the past two years.

“To get Deja Vu to this point took a lot of dedication, hard work and sleepless nights, but, luckily, it was all goal and vision-driven,” she said.

“Believing in myself helped me to get here and, throughout the years, I’ve met amazing, determined people from who Deja Vu grew.”

Cammarata said the show was a big success, with a big audience, and was also covered by Soweto TV.

Cammarata is on her way to Botswana next, and the next show in Benoni will be held toward the end of May, when she is planning to feature plus size models.
