Derek celebrates 38 years of financial service
Alphen Park resident Derek Dingwall is celebrating 38 years of service with Momentum.
Dingwall is a financial advisor, and runs a financial planning business under his name.
Momentum is an insurance and financial service business.
Dingwall joined the company as an agent in May 1977, when it was still known as Legal and General Assurance.
“It proved to be the correct career path for me, as I loved dealing with people,” said Dingwall.
“Legal and General eventually became Momentum, and I have thoroughly enjoyed 38 years of dealing with small businesses and families.”
Dingwall’s business is based in Boksburg and employees six people.
He admits a lot has changed economically and financially over the years, which required changing the direction of the business.
“We now focus completely on financial planning,” he explained.
“We have had to sit exams and be qualified in order to give advise on investments, life cover, estate planning and business assurance.”
As a financial advisor, Dingwall analyses businesses and people’s finances to determine their financial insurance.
He deals with disability, risk and death insurance.
He has also been a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) for 35 years.
“I was invited to to join MDRT in 1981, and I attended their annual general meeting in New York,” he said.
“I then realised I wanted to be part of the international life assurance community.”
The objective of MDRT is the “whole philosophy”, which stresses the importance of success in business, family, community and personal development.
Dingwall immigrated to South Africa from Scotland, in October 1968, with his wife and nine-month-old baby girl.
As a person could not immigrate to a foreign country without a skill, he worked as a skilled welder for many years.
In many people’s lives he is known as a motivational speaker.
Dingwall’s has advised business persons, members of the public and school children with the need to focus on goals.
He was also instrumental in the resolving the hyacinth issue at Homestead Dam.
He has been presented with the Paul Harris Rotary Award for his involvement within the community and hopes to continue growing the financial planning business to prosper for many more years.
