Let your hair down with the latest Startime Players production

Hairspray is a quirky feel-good show about a plus-sized teen, Tracy Turnblad, and her ambitious goal to appear on the Corny Collins TV show in 1962 Baltimore.

The show, which has been in preparation since February, has a cast of students and adults ready to sing and dance.

Tracy Turblad (played by Camryn McDonald), is a plus-sized teen with a personality as exuberant as her latest fashionable hairstyle.

When she is given the chance to dance on the popular Corny Collins (Donovan Arentson) Show, she – along with her best friend, Penny Pingleton (Courtney Madeley), mom, Edna Turnblad (Costa Keushgeurian), and dad, Wilbur (Rob Holmes) – soon realise that the show is not everything it appears to be on screen.

Segregation is alive and well in 1962 Baltimore, and Velma von Tussle (Lizé-Marie Naudé), the show’s producer, is determined to keep it that way, while her daughter, Amber (Katelyn Holmes), has big dreams of her own.

The show’s other star, Link Larkin (Claudio de Jesus), is the sweet, but misguided, boyfriend of Amber who, with Tracy’s help, soon starts to realise that the show needs to integrate both black and white members.

With the help of Seaweed J Stubbs (Lesego Maphoto), Little Inez (Goitseone Faith Mzimba) and the irrepressible Motormouth Maybelle (Kamogelo Phetla), the Turnblads set out to change the minds and hearts of the ice-cold Von Tussle duo.

The finale of the production is on Saturday, May 27.

• Fridays (May 12, 19 and 26) – 8pm

• Saturdays (May 20 and 27) – 8pm

• Saturday (May 27) – 3pm

• Sundays (May 14 and 21) – 3pm

Ticket prices are R80 per person (8pm show) and R60 per person (3pm show)
