Local female rapper wants to inspire others

Young rapper Nothando Mabuza, better known as Dynasty Futurebetty, wants to inspire aspiring female rappers through her music.

The former Wordsworth High School learner is working on her extended play (EP), I’m Not a Female Rapper which is due to be released on November 28.

She started writing music at the age of 12 and recording music at 15.

Mabuza said she was inspired by cyphers (freestyling) that would freestyle around her neighbourhood.

The 22-year-old studied performing arts at Oakfields College in Pretoria.

When asked what motivates her, Mabuza said she is motivated by young black women who are striving to succeed.

“I also draw motivation from life experiences, family and people I meet on a daily basis,” said Mabuza.

The youngster said her music is influenced by Okmalumkoolkat, Reason, Kwesta, Zoocci, BigStar Johnson and Coke Dope.

The Norkem Park resident has big dreams, but also faces challenges in reality, especially being recognised in the music industry.

“I have found it difficult to break into the industry as my mother, Connie Chiume, is a well-known actress,” she said.

“Producers tend to overcharge me because of where I come from.”

Mabuza said she wants to create her own success.

When asked how she plans to stay relevant in the industry, she said: “I don’t want to limit myself to one specific type of style. I will keep people on their toes with my style of rap.”

She said in five years’ time she would like to collaborate with Okmalumkoolkat and hopefully be one of the opening acts for Cassper Nyovest.

“I also want to establish a recording company that produces female artists.”

Besides being a rapper, Mabuza is also a theatre actress.

Her message to other upcoming artists is to go after whatever their heart desires.

“You will never find happiness while living in fear.”
