Every day is Earth Day at local school

Be part of the positive movement towards sustainable living.

THE Earth Day 2023 theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’, and the award-winning Eco-School, Birches Pre-Primary School, is doing just that with the many activities they’ve planned to celebrate this day.

Principal Scilla Edmonds encouraged other schools to invest in the planet by taking part in environment-friendly activities.

Each year, Earth Day, which is celebrated in more than 90 countries, has a theme that focuses on a particular environmental concern.

Birches Earth Day week kicked off with their Green Business this year.

Beans that were dried up last year were used again to plant this year.

“To celebrate, on Wednesday, the little ones, with the help of educators, revamped Sunny Spot Nursery and planted our collected climbing bean seeds in the school’s tunnel.

“This year, our business, Sustainably Yours, is being showcased to 16 early childhood development (ECD) schools that are now part of a 12-week Early Years Sustainability Challenge as an entrepreneur initiative by an international organisation called Teach a Man to Fish.

The celebrations continued on Thursday as one of the classes planned their runner beans.

The two tunnels at Birches offer every child in the school the opportunity to grow food.

“The two tunnels offer every child in the school the opportunity to grow food. Last year, we had a bean party with fresh beans. We want to grow one whole tunnel with green runner beans this year,” said Edmonds.

Edmonds highlighted that their nursery is for succulents and indigenous plants: spekboom, iboza, mother-in-law’s tongue, rock roses and marigolds, etc.

“We also sell mulch made from branches that have died and been chopped up by our chipper. We sell worm tea, homemade paving killer and hanging plants, too,” she said.

Every year, the school also uses their own produce to make salads or vegetable soup.

“Last year, we were left with tomatoes, which we used to show the children how you can even use a few tomatoes to make a whole meal – we made pasta salad. We are promoting healthy eating as well as sustainability!” said Edmonds.

Here are other initiatives that people can do to celebrate Earth Day:
Explore and enjoy nature
Walk or ride your bike.
Go on a nature walk.
Plant a tree.
Pick up litter in your community.
Visit a local farmer’s market.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle by shopping at second-hand shops.
