Win tickets to Padkos with Tony Cox

Guitarist Tony Cox presents work from his latest album at shows at Catalina Theatre this month.

ON achieving his sixth decade this last January and as busy as ever, South African acoustic guitar legend, Tony Cox heads out on the road for a year-long series of shows around SA to promote and perform music from his new album release, Padkos, which he brings to the Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from 22 May until 1 June.

Padkos is a project quite unlike Cox has ever produced before. Having built his entire career around an original work only ethic, with only one or two rare deviations, Cox decided to do an album almost entirely of covers.

But not just any old cover tunes, these are all South African tunes only. Songs and melodies from Cox’s life journey that he grew along with and loved and was inspired by, much of it shared by most South Africans from anywhere within our multifaceted culture, all of it performed in the guitar style that has given Cox an almost reverential status in SA and, due to his many travels, a healthy following from well beyond its borders.

Without giving too much away, Bright Blue’s Weeping is in there, as is Jabulani by P J powers and a stunning, instrumental version of Juluka’s Impi.

And so Padkos the album is born. The album is a mixture of solo guitar playing and ensemble with a few guests brought in to add a few extra spices and flavours.

Padkos also contains three original tunes: the title track, Padkos , a tearaway little three-chord foot-tapper; Long Walk to Nkandla, which is, strangely enough, also a foot-tapper and has as some would imagine, somewhat darker moments and performed on Cox’s earth-shattering baritone guitar and then there is a moody vocal track with the uncompromising power to move; the chilling yet with a serious groove, Invisible.

Shows at Catalina Theatre will be Thursday to Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 6pm.

Book through Computicket or 0861 915 8000.
