Umbilo community unites for clean-up, tree planting

Residents joined the Legacy Community Foundation to clean, green and restore public spaces through a community-driven initiative.

THE Legacy Community Foundation (LCF) hosted a successful clean-up and tree-planting event at Musgrave Tennis Club and surrounding areas recently.

The day began with an inspiring overview of the LCF’s vision. LCF team members described the organisation as a community-driven force dedicated to promoting safety, restoring dignity, improving health and family welfare, protecting the environment, and caring for local parks and all stakeholders.

“This is not just about today,” an LCF team member shared. “We have seen the gaps in our community, but we are challenging everyone to make this a continuous effort. The chairperson challenges everyone to clean and care for, not only when we come together, but as a daily commitment.”

The event also included a meaningful tree-planting activity. “Each plant we put into the ground represents life and hope,” explained a member of the LCF team. “It is a symbol of the brighter, cleaner future we are building together for our families and our community.” Each stakeholder planted their own flower. Residents left the event energised and motivated, with many expressing commitment to keeping the momentum alive.

The team emphasised the purpose of the initiative: standing up for recycling, fostering collaboration, and making Umbilo greener and cleaner. They highlighted the challenges the community faces, noting that many public spaces and “Umbilo corners” have been neglected, leading to litter and unsafe conditions.

The Green Initiative was presented as an ongoing programme. The LCF hopes communities will regularly organise or partner with others to clean streets, restore public spaces, and build a stronger culture of environmental care.

The LCF thanked all roleplayers, including the Parks Department, Umbilo CPF, Homeland Security, Durban Solid Waste, UCCA, Black Ants, Youth Desk, and residents.
