DURBAN Girls’ College old girl, Jacinta Jubb will jet off to Germany at the end of the month to play hockey for South Africa in the Junior World Cup.

Young Jacinta is also extremely proud to have been selected for the national team. The team had to qualify for the Junior World Cup by playing in the Africa Cup last year where they won quite convincingly.

“This is a tribute to the team’s dedication and to the amazing coaching we have received,” said the young athlete.

Jacinta started playing hockey as a junior, at Durban Girls’ College and was part of the Junior Riverside Hockey programme, where her potential was spotted very early on. She received grooming from both camps, together with many, many hours of her own time spent practising and perfecting her skills.

Those many hours of practise started paying off, as Jacinta represented her school from U14 and continued to do so right through to U21.

She was selected to play for the Ladies KZN Raiders team at the age of 16. Her incredible strength and keen eye for the ball has had an impact on many a game. The high achiever was awarded the Sportsperson of the Year at her school together with Player of the Year at her club, as well as many tournament wins and top goal scorer awards.

The youngster said the accolades motivated her to play hard and be more determined to achieve her goals.

She attended the Junior Olympic Games, held in Singapore in 2010. It was her first experience at an international tournament. This once again drove her to dig deeper and three years later, she was back in the international arena, competing in the JWC.

Her preparation for JWC has been in Pretoria, playing for Tuks University ,where she is currently studying towards a BA in Sports Science. She participated in the inaugural televised Varsity Cup as well as all the inter provincial tournaments either for her province or for her university.

The sacrifices she has made are bearing fruit and she continues to commit herself to the sport of hockey. The dream is finally being realised, Jacinta is in Holland with the South African team, making final preparation for the tournament where she looks forward to making herself and her country proud.
