Writing heavyweights celebrated at art school graduation

CFAD paid tribute to author Aziz Hassim with a special award recognising literary giants at their graduation ceremony event over the weekend.

THE Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design CFAD held its annual graduation dinner, fashion extravaganza and Too Little Too Late awards ceremony at the DLI Hall in Greyville on Friday evening, 23, August.

The highlight of the evening was the tertiary institution’s acknowledgment of unsung heroes instrumental in weaving the complex fabric of our community. “The TLTL – Too Little Too Late – Awards are given annually to individuals who contribute unselfishly to the community without the recognition they deserve. It is through their work people were able to break the silence,” said CFAD founder Dr Nanda Soobben.

Awardees this year were chairperson of the Anti Drug Forum (ADF) in Durban, Sam Pillay and teenage activist, passive resistance campaigner, martyr and follower of the Satyagraha, the late Valliamma whose family accepted the award on her behalf.

The inaugural Aziz Hassim Literary award was added to the event in honour of the popular Durban novelist Aziz Hassim who died earlier this year.

The literary awards were bestowed on veteran playwright, theatre director and social commentator, Ronnie Govender, poet, commentator, activist and journalist, Don Mattera and author, Drum magazine contributor, academic, critic, poet and essayist, the late Richard Rive.

A dinner was served while the first year students presented their funky fashion show made with recyclable materials.
