Community Chest stalwart retires
Cynthia Miller will continue to help out where she can at Community Chest after retirement.

COMMUNITY Chest will say a sad farewell to one of its stalwarts, Cynthia Miller, who retired at the end of August.
Cynthia has worked at the Chest for 19 years and said that although she is sad to be leaving, she has taken the last closing months to accept her retirement, and sees it as a good time and not a dreaded time.
Cynthia started at Community Chest in Durban as a share fundraiser, a job she did for three years before moving into the corporate fundraising sector, where she has worked up until now.
“I’ve made a lot of friends with our donors along the way and am comforted that so many of them have told me they will miss me! It is a huge adjustment in my life, but this has helped the transition,” she said.
“I have enjoyed working to fund our beneficiaries who need help. Being a fundraiser needs a compassionate heart, it’s not just a job, it’s a devotion towards other people. It’s only when you encounter your own setbacks in life that you are mindful of what other people are going through. I learnt through the people from Headway when my mom had a stroke that you need to give people dignity, so I came into this job not seeing it as a business but a calling,” she said.
Although looking forward to her retirement, Cynthia still plans to volunteer for the Communtiy Chest and hopes to do some work for the Robin Hood Foundation as well.
“God’s timing is amazing. I used to fret about getting old, and being alone, but now I’m looking forward to retiring and getting married in November! I look forward to building my marriage with my Robin as well. I’m not ready to just do nothing. I will also be helping out at my church, Highway Christian Community. It’s exciting, you never know what God has planned for you,” she said.
