Sex in the suburbs is bad for business

Prostitutes plying their trade in Che Guevara Road are having a negative impact on nearby businesses.

THE ongoing problem with prostitutes does not just affect local residents but businesses in the area are also being detrimentally affected by the women selling their wares on street corners, pavements and rented properties.

That’s the opinion of local businessman, Graeme Kerr, who is frustrated by the lack of positive action taken against the women and those who profit from prostitution. Kerr, who runs a business in Che Guevara (Moore) Road said his major concern was the degeneration of the area.

“The quality of the area is definitely going downhill. The property next door to my business is being rented out as a brothel, along with another property up the road, and I feel the owners should be held responsible. The women are noisy and I have had to go out to complain to the girls,” he said.

Kerr said the women used to operate in Esther Robers (Frere) Road but had now moved across to Che Guevara (Moore) Road.

“The women never really affected us much, but now they sit on the veranda next door, outside our property or across the road. We are overpowered by a stench when their linen is washed as the muck runs out and down the road, along with raw sewage, as the water uses the same line as the sewage. The driveway next to our property is also used for ‘business’ and I have had to clean up toilet paper and condoms every Monday. I’ve even seen faceces in the driveway as well. These are definitely not upmarket ladies!” he said.

According to Kerr, the girls work all day, every day with Fridays and month end being their most busiest times. He said he understood the police had issues when dealing with prostitutes and although they were competent in arresting the women, it was difficult to prosecute them.

“If we sit back and do nothing this area will collapse. It is lowering the tone and is just going to get worse if we don’t act on it. The asset forfiture unit should close down these illegal businesses,” he said.

Kerr said he was lucky he met clients on site and not at his business premises, adding that nearby a business was being negatively affected by the rampant prostitution and filth along the road.

“The company is losing turnover as customers comment on the smell from the sewage and the fact that prostitutes sit outside. It’s an absolute mess,” he said.

The owner of the company, who did not want to be named, said many of her customers commented on the filth in the street and the number of prostitutes. “The girls used to ply their trade right outside our door. Condoms littered the pathway to our door and they even propositioned one of my staff,” she said.
